Here’s a fun and easy cake to make for Halloween. I just don’t have time to get too crazy on the cake decorating and I definitely don’t want to spend a fortune on a gluten free double layer cake. So….. here’s my take on an easy-to-do decorated cake that won’t break the bank.
Spooky Spider Web Cake
Ingredients:
1 package yellow or chocolate gluten free cake mix (I like King Arthur Flour’s cake mixes)
Ingredients to make the cake (as per the box)
2 containers of gluten free vanilla frosting (or homemade, if you prefer)
¼ cup gluten free semisweet chocolate chips
14 plastic spiders, washed and dried ( no real ones please 🙂 )
Directions:
Make the cake as directed on the package, using two 9 inch baking pans. Bake and let cool. Place one layer on top of a cake plate. Fill with the frosting. Place the second layer on top. Frost the sides and the top. Immediately space 13 spiders around the sides, pushing into the frosting so that they will stick. Allow the frosting to set up for an hour. Then smooth the top with a piece of plastic wrap, if desired.
Melt the chocolate chips in the microwave until smooth, heating at 15 second intervals. You do not want to burn the chocolate. Pour the melted chocolate into a sandwich sized Ziploc bag. Snip a tiny hole in one of the corners.
Starting in the middle, make a spiral until you reach the outer edge. Don’t worry about making it perfect. Just do it. You can see my squiggles as I went to the outer edges. No one will see them.
Take a tooth pick. Start in the center of the cake and drag it to the edge. Repeat until you have dragged it between all the spiders. Put a spider on top of the cake.
Makes 13 servings.
There it is with all the spiders in place. Perfect!
Note: You can change this recipe and make individual spider web cupcakes instead. Frost the tops, make the web and stick a spider in the middle of it.
I’m not sure I want all those spiders in my house.
Too spooky.

I just love these pans! Made in the USA and sold by Amazon.
For the spiders you can use any spiders you find at your local Halloween store or grocery store. I found mine on Amazon and they were the perfect size! You want the spiders to be about a inch of two big. If you click on the link it will pop you over to the ones I used!!
Thanks so much for your support. Every time you purchase from my links I get a small commission from Amazon. It is greatly appreciated!
