Gluten Free Recipes: Onion Rings


I go back and read my old cooking magazines to get new ideas for gluten free recipes. I found this one for onion rings and decided to give it a try. These were baked in the oven and not deep fried in a dutch oven. I have deep fried vegetables before and made quite a mess in the process.

I was curious to see if I could convert this recipe over and end up with something that tasted like the onion rings I used to have.

These are every bit as good as I had hoped they would be! Crunchy onion rings just perfect for dipping in ketchup or ranch dressing. I ate quite a few!

Gluten Free Onion Rings

1/2 cup gluten free flour blend
1 egg, room temperature
1/2 cup buttermilk, room temperature
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
Salt and pepper to taste
2.2 oz of gluten free plain cracker ( half of a package)
4 cups of gluten free kettle cooked potato chips
2 large yellow onions, cut into rings ( I used sweet onions)
6 Tbs canola oil or vegetable oil

Make sure your oven racks are placed in the top third and the lower third of the oven. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Place 1/4 cup gluten free flour in a shallow dish. Beat the egg and the buttermilk together in a medium bowl.

Whisk the remaining gluten free flour, cayenne, 1/2 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp salt into the buttermilk mixture and place into a shallow bowl. Using a food processor, pulse the crackers and chips together until finely ground. Place in another shallow bowl. You should have three bowls altogether.

Working with one ring at a time, coat the onion first in the plain flour, shaking off the excess. Then dip in the buttermilk, allowing to drip off and then drop into the crumbs coating both sides. Place the onion ring on a piece of parchment paper on the counter. Repeat with the remaining onion rings until they are all coated and ready.

Using two baking sheets, place 3 Tbs of oil on each one. Place the baking sheets in the hot oven for about 8 minutes and remove. Carefully remove from the oven and tilt to coat the pan. Immediately place the prepared onion rings on the baking sheets and place in the oven.

Bake for 8 minutes and then flip them over and bake for another 8 minutes or until golden brown and crunchy. Serve right away.

Makes about 4 to 6 servings.

Get your kids involved with this one. It’s messy and gooey. You get your hands all covered in gloppy messy stuff. Perfect!


Ps.. And they get a fast food treat they probably haven’t had in a while. Go for It!

    Thank you for the recipe for baked GF onion rings, it looks great. I think however, there is at least one minor error in your recipe. For example, “Place 1/4 cup gluten free in a shallow dish. ” Do you mean GF flour?

    What’s a TB? Do you mean Tbs (tablespoon)? or teaspoon (tsp)?

      Yes, it is gluten free flour, preferably one without xanthan gum in it. You are going to dip them in the flour to coat. And it means tablespoon. Thanks for pointing these out to me.
